Majiang Tea House
Majiang Tea House exists specifically to provide opportunities for intercultural exchanges between people of Chinese and non-Chinese backgrounds. It’s a meeting place and learning centre that facilitates both a Chinese understanding of Western perspectives and a Western understanding of Chinese perspectives.
In our Majiang Tea House, you can access a variety of intercultural texts (eg literary texts, street signs and advertisements) that will enable you to develop an in-depth understanding of contemporary China and the Chinese peoples’ way of thinking.
Majiang Tea House acts as a third place - a meeting place “where the understanding of how different worldviews operate (in one's own linguaculture and foreign linguacultures) frees the mind to explore and at the same time to create interculturality” (Professor Joseph Lo Bianco, 1999).
In the Forum we have set up four Majiang tables; these are for learners, teachers, business people and for people with ‘relationships’. The Forum is for everyone interested in Chinese culture and language to meet, learn and have some fun. Another Majiang table is used to display specially selected reading materials and to illustrate the creative intercultural thematic reading approach we advocate.
